Cushion crochet plastic
The simple black plastic bag is everywhere in Africa.
Coming from the markets or any corner shop, they are a very real plague when thrown away on the streets, polluting the environment and killing animals that ingest them.
Crochet to the rescue. More than 300 women in Burkina Faso, on the west coast of Africa, are taught crochet techniques re-using plastic bags to make these items.
In 2008, designer Delphine Kohler established a not for profit organization aimed to assist women in need with priority being given to immigrant women in France and women in rural areas of Africa.
The organization helps women to help themselves by providing them with training and work so they can achieve financial independence and access to health and education. In 2010 in conjunction with a French cooperative enterprise that is a member of the French Fair Trade Organization, the plastic bag recycling project was established in Burkina Faso.
In April 2011, the producers collaborated with YSL to produce a limited edition of 60 iconic MUSE bags made from a specially crafted fabric composed of recycled plastic bags and woven cotton that you see used in this cushion. Very limited quantity.
